Learning Takes Root in Healthy Gardens
By: Chanin Eredia
We are excited to launch ESRCD’s Healthy Garden Program, a vibrant new way for schools to bring hands-on learning, nutrition education, and community connection to students. This program teaches the full journey of food, from healthy soil to the community and family table, helping students understand where food comes from and why it matters.
Through Jr. Farmer and our Head Start garden partnerships, healthy gardens become dynamic outdoor classrooms. Students dig in by preparing soil, planting seeds, and caring for growing crops. Along the way, they build patience, confidence, and pride as they watch their efforts turn into real results.
Keeping a garden healthy takes commitment. Jr. Farmer students take an active role in watering, weeding, and maintaining garden spaces, while ESRCD educators and interns provide ongoing support at school sites. These shared responsibilities help students develop accountability and a strong sense of ownership.
Gardens also bring people together. Students collaborate during planting and harvest activities, and families and school staff join in through garden days and workshops. These moments turn school gardens into welcoming spaces that strengthen connection and community.
Schools can sign up for Jr. Farmer and Jr. Chef to give students the full garden-to-table experience, growing food and learning how to prepare it. Schools that book both programs receive a discounted rate, making it easier than ever to launch healthy gardens and inspired learning on campus.
