From Paper Maps to Precision Tools: Smarter Conservation in Action
By: Chris Yohannan, Director of Conservation
Conservation planning has changed a lot over the years. What once relied on paper maps and field notes now includes digital tools that help farmers, ranchers, and conservation professionals make informed decisions for working lands. GIS mapping, soil moisture data, irrigation evaluations, and the Web Soil Survey provide valuable information to support efficient water use, healthy soils, and productive agricultural operations, while advancing our city’s vision of “Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health”.
At the East Stanislaus Resource Conservation District, these tools help us work alongside local landowners and producers to develop practical conservation solutions. Resources such as COMET-Planner, Conservation Desktop, and endangered species screening tools make planning more efficient while helping protect the natural resources that support agriculture. Technology continues to evolve, but our commitment remains the same, providing trusted, locally focused conservation assistance that benefits both the land and the people who depend on it.
