Funding Agricultural Education for the Next Generation

By Sabreena Mcleod, Project Lead, Education

Our Education department plays a vital role in advancing our mission. As interest in agriculture as a career continues to decline nationwide, ESRCD has made youth education a central priority, emphasizing the importance of engaging the next generation in agricultural literacy and environmental stewardship.

Through a range of hands-on programs, including our Jr. Chef and Jr. Farmer, we introduce students of all ages to topics such as plant science, farm to fork, pollinators, and sustainable agriculture.

In addition to these core programs, ESRCD’s education team continually pursues grant funding to broaden its outreach and sustain ongoing programming. One recent initiative, supported by a Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) grant, brought garden-based learning to 12 Head Start preschool sites across the region! Each site received a mini garden featuring multiple companion planting systems, designed to introduce young children to agriculture at an early age. Educators report high levels of engagement, with preschoolers demonstrating curiosity and enthusiasm as they participate in planting and caring for the gardens.

These programs are making a meaningful impact in our community. By fostering early connections between children and agriculture, we aim to cultivate both awareness and long-term interest in food systems, an investment we view as essential to the future of both the local community and the broader environment.
